Welcome to Small Steps to Health where we do not take orders from a cookie! Some of us cannot lose weight because we do not exercise, eat too much unhealthy food, or just eat too much in general. I am not part of the above groups, but I am an active member of the emotional [...]
Remember my previous about wedding dress sizing and how horrible it makes a bride feel squeezing into a dress two or three sizes smaller than their usual dress size? Well, I have another story for you about my Chinese dress shopping experience in San Francisco.
Though I am smaller than most American women, I am a big Chinese girl (I cannot believe that I am saying that about my 5’3” frame). The first three shops I visited in Chinatown did not even have my size (size 10 in the rear and a size 6/8 on top). The fourth shop had a few XXL dresses available (I am embarrassed even writing those words. I feel almost as awkward as the time my co-workers caught me eating a Hungryman XXL after telling them that I try not to get microwave food.)

I wonder how much they paid someone to make up catch phrases such as “recession pounds.” According to Yahoo News, as people tighten their spending during a recession, they “will cut back on healthy but relatively expensive items such as fresh fish, fruit, vegetables and whole grains, in favor of cheaper options high in sugar and saturated fats.”
It is certainly true that calorie dense, but low nutritious foods are cheaper than fresh fruit and vegetables. That is why sales at McDonald’s are going up. A 7% jump last year during its 3rd quarter.

I consider this month to be my 1st year blog anniversary. I did not start to blog regularly until January of last year, even though I have a couple of posts from previous months. Though I am quite happy with the amount of traffic I get from people passing through, I really want to have more “regulars” show up on my doorsteps. And as with real life, you cannot make friends unless you let people in – let them see the real you.
So this year, I would like to share more stories about my life (or at least stories pertaining to health and fitness), even if they do not end with some profound sentence about how the story will change my readers life. I would like to take shot at trying to amuse my readers with the mishaps and adventures in my life……………..

It is common knowledge that we are getting fatter as a nation. It has long been known that overweight girls tend to mature earlier than thinner girls. But why is that the case? The answer might be in our fat cells.

I discovered that we have an electronic 3 hole punch at work because I heard my co-worker, Eric, using it. You stick a few sheets of paper into this contraption, press a button, it makes some noise, and voila! you have 3 holes on the edge of your paper. Right next to this electronic 3 hole punch is your standard commercial grade three hole punch with the metal handle that you manually have to lift and push down.
First there was the Automatic Millionaire, then the Automatic Homeowner, now there is the Automatic Supersize Me.

Though I do not have any children of my own yet, the idea of child obesity is terrifying. I am living in a time period where the possibility of a generation full of sick or dying people due to chronic diseases could be a reality. And when you consider that it is all preventable – that kids are sitting and eating themselves to death – it is staggering.
I think most parents do not make the connection that by taking the easier route they are compromising the future health of their child. It is a duty that deserves equal if not more consideration than which educational toys to put in the nursery or planning for a college education.

The entire spectrum of human emotions can be associated with weight in our culture. You can be jealous, disappointed, frustrated, angry, happy, etc either about your own weight or someone else’s weight.
A hundred years ago, the primary concern with weight is rather you are well fed and disease free. Now diet is a dirty four letter word. It changed from what you can eat that will not kill outright to what you cannot eat to keep your hips pubescent.

This article will discuss how the changing female hormones during our teenage years impact our weight. I will not be discussing the emotional aspects of puberty, just the physical aspects.
As females, our bodies change every 15 years or so – puberty, pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause – because of the changes in our hormone levels. Hopefully you have some close female relatives to help guide you through each stage. If you are interested in learning more about how your hormones and fat cells influence your weight, please click on my hormones or fat cell tags.
