This is the second post of my soy series. This post will discuss how Chinese families eat soy, soy isoflavones, and who should limit soy in their diet.

While soy is no stranger in our diet, it only amounts to 2 ounces daily (7-8 grams of soy protein). Remember how I mentioned in my last post that most Chinese families do not eat the FDA recommended daily 25 grams of soy protein in order to get its cholesterol lowering effect?

This post is a book review of The Smart Woman’s Guide to Midlife & Beyond by Janet Horn, MD and Robin H. Miller, MD. This book offers a chapter on common health issues faced by women after the age of 50. The health issues range from your brain to your uterus.

To me acupuncture and herbal supplements are as “normal” to me as the prescribed medications my doctor gives me. I always view alternative medicine and herbal supplements as another revenue I can discuss with my doctor when traditional medicine fail to give me an answer. Of course, traditional medical advice are not neglected either in this book……

The Women’s Hormonal Phase series discuss the hormonal changes we go through in our lifetime from our teens to after menopause. Each posts discuss what is going on with our bodies at each stage, the health challenges, and possible solutions.

This final concluding post in the series discuss what happens after menopause and how to staying physically independent as we age.

Most of the decline we experience after menopause comes from disuse. After the age of 50, we start to lose 1 pound of muscle year. After 3 years, we lose the ability to burn 150 calories each day, which is the equivalent of 14 pounds of weight gain a year.
