Post image for Cooking and Kitchen Excuses

I see a lot of similarities between my cooking reluctance and sedentary people exercising for the first time. Notice how I NEED to have all the proper kitchen equipment, just like some people NEED to have all the proper exercise equipment. Whatever happened to just doing it?

Post image for Resentment on Time Spent Exercising and Eating Healthy

Exercise and eating healthy is like having a baby, after a while, you cannot imagine it not being part of your life. Your body becomes used to having an outlet for stress and being fueled with high octane gas. But when you are starting out, just like pregnancy, you are uncomfortable and maybe fearful of things to come.

Post image for Moderation and Processed Food Muse

Sometimes I feel like the word moderation is thrown into the healthy eating arena to placate us into believing that it is ok to have cake once a week. But mostly I believe the main reason is to prevent a backlash from processed food manufacturers.

Life As Slow As a Baby TurtleWelcome to Small Steps to Health where we do not take orders from a cookie!

The move to my new house is almost complete. We are now living at our new house and clearing out the miscellaneous stuff out of the duplex we were living in. Since we brought a foreclosed home, it requires a lot of elbow grease in order to make it habitable again.

Though my weight has not yet reflect my lack of exercise in the last three weeks, all the takeout is finally taking a toll on my energy level this week. Initially we were spending more money to get healthier restaurant food, but as the days turn into weeks, we find ourselves turning to fast food, both for the convenience and the cheap prices. I feel tired throughout the day from the lack of exercise and the junk food we have been eating.

Post image for Review: Pom Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice

After hearing my brother raved about Pom Wonderful over Christmas, I am excited that someone wants to send me case for review. However, after hearing about the expired batch that Every Gym”s Nightmare got, I approached the box with a little trepidation and a frantic need to check the expiration date before I rip open the drink. It is bowling night and I am always ravenousness when I get home from the league. And having a box of anything edible on my doorsteps is cause for a little victory dance.

The Taste

Unlike most juices that slide down like water, I feel like there is a depth to Pom Wonderful. Not heavy like V8, but definitely with a little more substance and a tang at the end. I can actually taste the hard part inside the fleshy juicy part of a pomegranate seed. I am not sure if I am describing this correctly, but if you ever eaten a pomegranate then you know that the center of the seed is a little harder than the fleshy part and has its own unique taste.

food-variety-on-a-stick

Though variety is the spice of life, when it comes to dieting, variety increase our chances of failure. The January issue of most magazines always have some kind of meal and exercise plan to whip us back into shape after a couple months of holiday eating. If you count the ingredient list of these meal plans, they usually average at least 6 to 10 ingredients. Most of which are used in only 1 or 2 meals for a week long meal plan. How practical is that?! Variety in food is what kills most diet plans.

The execution of a diet meal plan is the key to success for weight loss.

This is the second post of my soy series. This post will discuss how Chinese families eat soy, soy isoflavones, and who should limit soy in their diet.

While soy is no stranger in our diet, it only amounts to 2 ounces daily (7-8 grams of soy protein). Remember how I mentioned in my last post that most Chinese families do not eat the FDA recommended daily 25 grams of soy protein in order to get its cholesterol lowering effect?

Eating at a restaurant is like eating blind. We can easily eat an entire day’s calories in one sitting without even realizing it. The portions are huge, the yummy bread is white, and the vegetables are dripping with butter and cream. Eating at a restaurant can be a minefield for anyone trying to stay healthy.

This post will discuss a 3 step plan for eating healthy at a restaurant.

Yogurt is the cash cow of the dairy industry. Add some fruit, you have one product. Add some thickeners, you have another product. My problem with yogurt is the sugar, not the health claim

Sugar is approximately 55% of the 80 calories in Go-GURT. With approximately 5 grams of sugar, my co-worker is slurping a little over 1 teaspoon of sugar in 1 minute!…………….
