I absolutely adore the full length mirror at the women’s restroom at work. It reminds me of the funny mirrors at the carnivals that morphed your body into unnatural shapes. But there is nothing natural about this mirror.

One of the first steps to changing any kind of behavior is holding yourself accountable, whether it is through food journaling or taking pictures of everything that goes into your mouth, just as long as you have something that provides a visual on how much you have been eating.

A few days ago, I was at a local university giving a speech about how great it is to be an engineer to a group of incoming freshmen. So do I consider myself successful? No. I do not feel that I am at my optimal health. Success to me is link to my overall health and wellness.

Throughout my childhood and most of my earlier adulthood, I had bad posture. As soon as I sit down, my knees and hip slipped forward, my back concaved, and my shoulder blades rested on the backrest of the chair or sofa. Sometimes a leg would be flung over an armrest. But whatever the position, now I would cringe to see myself compressing and contorting my body that way.

In my early 20s when I first started exercising regularly, I was overtraining myself. Of course, I did not recognize the insomnia and constant fatigue were the effects of exercising too much. I thought my never ending aches were a badge of my dedication to a healthier and thinner lifestyle. Neither did I notice that my headaches were not from drinking too much coffee and that it is not natural for a young woman to have that many colds.

Our office secretary called me a “Barbie” at lunch today. My first reaction was “what?!!” Since I have a transparent face, my confusion was obvious.
Apparently the group of women in my new department call any women within their healthy BMI a “Barbie.”

For the first time in my career, the women outnumbered the men in my office. Early on my career, I have often been in meetings where I am the only woman. Nothing wrong with that. Except that during long meetings, the men do not understand why I need to pee as often as I do. I notice some of the men in my office only use the bathroom twice a day (you guess it, I sit by the bathroom). I seriously think these people are dehydrated!
But there is a dark side to being in the land of the women.

I cannot believe that today would be my last day in this office. I have already gotten over my disappointment for being voted off the island. But what astonished me was that 26 people showed to my farewell luncheon at the restaurant. And I got over $130 worth of gifts. In addition, I had individuals taking me out to lunch for the last couple of days. All this and I have barely been in this office for 8 months!

“Good fortune is not cause by chance, but by change.” — that saying from my fortune cookie two weeks ago sealed my fate at my current position. Looks like I am the politic pawn that got transferred to another position so that my department could show on paper that they are cutting expenses. If you are a new reader, you would not have known that I just got transferred in my current position last summer.
