Post image for Online Health Record and Weight Bumps

It was pretty neat clicking through my online health record to find out why I had an appointment with my doctor on May of 2007. But as I click through the appointment list, I notice that the online health record also list my “official weight” at every visit. I knew I should have taken off my shoes before hopping on the doctor’s scale!

Welcome to Small Steps to Health where we do not take orders from a cookie!

This post is a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of porcelain vs. silver metal dental filling materials.

I replaced two of my old silver colored metal fillings with two porcelain fillings last year. It was a vanity decision. However, if given another chance, I would have left my old fillings alone.

kissing pregnant

Welcome to Small Steps to Health where we do not take orders from a cookie!

Some insurance companies cover every aspect of the pregnancy and delivery, but that is if you have a top notched health insurance (or you are paying high premiums).  According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, a typical uncomplicated vaginal birth could cost anywhere between $1,500 to $7,900 in out-of-pocket expenses.  A typical uncomplicated C-section could cost anywhere between $2,200 – $9,800 in out-of-pocket expenses.  What if there are complications?  For a complicated C-section, you are looking at $21,200.  Just delivering the baby is expensive!  And this does not include the cost associated with prenatal care and wellness visits after the birth.

Welcome to Small Steps to Health where we do not take orders from a cookie!

This post is a discussion of how to obtain low cost health care options when we cannot afford health insurance or are uninsurable.

the-great-american-heart-hoax

American spends at least $600 billion a year on invasive cardiovascular care. For a country with only 5% of the world’s population, we sure seem to spend more money than anyone else on our heart. Money aside, the risk involve in bypass surgery, stent placements, and coronary artery angioplasties might not be as effective as the medical community lead us to believe.

In The Great American Heart Hoax, Dr. Michael Ozner dispel the myths of why heart surgeries such as bypass surgery, stent placements, and coronary artery angioplasties do not work and how diet, exercise, and medical therapy might achieve better results for a majority of patients with heart disease.

Post image for February is Heart Disease Awareness Month

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women living in this country. As I mentioned in my Differences Between the Fat Cells in Women and Men, pre-menopausal women are more efficient at removing digested fat from our bloodstream after a meal.

Our fluxing estrogen level make us do crazy things, but it also protects us from heart disease. Though it is rare for women under the age of 50 to have a heart attack, we are more likely to die from a heart attack than men.

And after menopause, all bets are off. Heart disease is an equal opportunity killer after the age of 50.
