Eating Healthy

My friend’s little girl offered me a fruit roll-up when our families went camping last weekend.  It has been over a decade since I had a fruit roll-up, but I have fond memories of my younger brother and I taking turns whining at the grocery store until our mother tossed a box into the cart.  Behind her back, barely able to conceal our grins, we winked at each other.

I did not care about the nutrition of my snacks when I was a little girl.  But last week I felt compel to look at the nutrition labeling on the fruit roll-up box.

snack time

My friend, Ally, recently came over fuming about snack time at school. After three days of her son bringing home the nutritious snacks that she carefully packs for him, she called the teacher. Instead of eating the nutritious snacks, her son eats the chips and cookies that the teacher provides for the students without a snack. What 8 year old wants string cheese or fruit pieces when there are Goldfish and Doritos? Especially when junk food banned from the home?

Every few months, I struggle with my resolution to decrease my coffee intake.  I do not need caffeine, but  I love the taste of coffee.  And decaf just does not taste the same.  But I try to limit myself to a weekly coffee treat because I am part of the whipped, foamed, blended cult created by [...]

Welcome to Small Steps to Health where we do not take orders from a cookie!

Sometimes I wonder if aliens are watching us from a distant planet whether they would find it strange the amount of money or time we spend on seeking expert advice on how to eat healthy. We read magazines and books, consult with nutritionists and doctors, and even check with the government (ie. the food pyramid) on one of our most basic survival skills.

For the first time in my career, the women outnumbered the men in my office. Early on my career, I have often been in meetings where I am the only woman. Nothing wrong with that. Except that during long meetings, the men do not understand why I need to pee as often as I do. I notice some of the men in my office only use the bathroom twice a day (you guess it, I sit by the bathroom). I seriously think these people are dehydrated!

But there is a dark side to being in the land of the women.

It is pretty astonishing the amount of emotional baggage that we being to the dinner table. Each time we sit at the dinner table, we are eating with the shade of our childhood disappointment with food.

Life As Slow As a Baby TurtleWelcome to Small Steps to Health where we do not take orders from a cookie!

The move to my new house is almost complete. We are now living at our new house and clearing out the miscellaneous stuff out of the duplex we were living in. Since we brought a foreclosed home, it requires a lot of elbow grease in order to make it habitable again.

Though my weight has not yet reflect my lack of exercise in the last three weeks, all the takeout is finally taking a toll on my energy level this week. Initially we were spending more money to get healthier restaurant food, but as the days turn into weeks, we find ourselves turning to fast food, both for the convenience and the cheap prices. I feel tired throughout the day from the lack of exercise and the junk food we have been eating.
