Eating Healthy

I usually have a substantial mini-meal before my Wednesday bowling league. I have half a sandwich left over from my lunch. The roast beef was too salty when I ate the other half earlier in the day.

If you are overweight and unhappy, the solution is not in another diet book or celebrity trainer. If you find yourself always back at the same place every few years (or maybe months), you need to figure out what is holding you back. Weight control starts in your mind. You are at exactly where you need to be. You cannot move pass GO unless you figure out why you are holding on to your weight.

If we only ate when we are hungry and only enough food to ease our hunger, then chances are that we will not have a weight problem. If only it was that easy!

Moderation and Processed Food Muse

Sometimes I feel like the word moderation is thrown into the healthy eating arena to placate us into believing that it is ok to have cake once a week. But mostly I believe the main reason is to prevent a backlash from processed food manufacturers.

Healthy Food Choices in a Marriage

My husband and I have this tug-o-war about healthy food choices in our marriage. My husband is from the “see food” school of thought when it comes to food. When he is hungry and he sees food, it goes into his stomach. Hence, he always appreciates my poor cooking skills.

We have a group of friends that have an annual Super Bowl party that rotates among our homes. Since embarking on my healthy lifestyle path, my husband and I have been supplying the veggies tray for the last two Super Bowl parties, the annual camping trip, and the annual Christmas party. However, my friends wanted the ranch dressing, but not my celery or carrot sticks.

Birthdays and Food

I am turning 31 this weekend. Birthdays are always an exciting time for me. All the free lunches and free dinners because people want to treat you. Then there are the birthday cakes (yep, multiple ones). Lastly there is the grand finale feast that my mom spends all day shopping and preparing when I visit. And of course, there are all the restaurants my husband drags me to because of the lure of a free birthday meal.

Some of us cannot lose weight because we do not exercise, eat too much unhealthy food, or just eat too much in general.  I am not part of the above groups, but I am an active member of the emotional eaters club.  I have a tendency to reach for carbs when I am bored or [...]

My friend’s little girl offered me a fruit roll-up when our families went camping last weekend.  It has been over a decade since I had a fruit roll-up, but I have fond memories of my younger brother and I taking turns whining at the grocery store until our mother tossed a box into the cart.  Behind her back, barely able to conceal our grins, we winked at each other.

I did not care about the nutrition of my snacks when I was a little girl.  But last week I felt compel to look at the nutrition labeling on the fruit roll-up box.

snack time

My friend, Ally, recently came over fuming about snack time at school. After three days of her son bringing home the nutritious snacks that she carefully packs for him, she called the teacher. Instead of eating the nutritious snacks, her son eats the chips and cookies that the teacher provides for the students without a snack. What 8 year old wants string cheese or fruit pieces when there are Goldfish and Doritos? Especially when junk food banned from the home?
