Review: Pom Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice

in Product Reviews

After hearing my brother raved about Pom Wonderful over Christmas, I am excited that someone wants to send me case for review.  However, after hearing about the expired batch that Every Gym”s Nightmare got, I approached the box with a little trepidation and a frantic need to check the expiration date before I rip open the drink.  It is bowling night and I am always ravenousness when I get home from the league.  And having a box of anything edible on my doorsteps is cause for a little victory dance.

The Taste

Unlike most juices that slide down like water, I feel like there is a depth to Pom Wonderful.  Not heavy like V8, but definitely with a little more substance and a tang at the end.  I can actually taste the hard part inside the fleshy juicy part of a pomegranate seed.  I am not sure if I am describing this correctly, but if you ever eaten a pomegranate then you know that the center of the seed is a little harder than the fleshy part and has its own unique taste.

My husband thinks it taste like prune juice mixed with cranberries.  However, you should know that the majority of the juices and sodas in my household are consumed by him.  This means that his taste buds are used to drinking more sugar than mine.

Since we cannot decided on the taste, I asked a co-worker to try a bottle.  She thinks it taste no different than cranberry juice.

So there you have it, three people, three opinions.

The Varieties

Pom Wonderful also makes a few different varieties.  My brother likes the Pom Wonderful with lychee.  Lychee is an Asian fruit.  I have yet to try it, but sure would love to the next time I buy juice.

Normally I buy the Minute Maid pomegranate tea (which has a BLEND of 12% juice).  This means that we cannot tell how much pomegranate juice is actually in the Minute Maid. I cannot drink the Minute Maid without watering it down with water since its second ingredient is high fructose corn syrup.  With Pom Wonderful I can drink it out of the bottle.  This might not be a good thing in this economy since I can make the Minute Maid last by adding water.  :D  But then again, do you put a price on health?  I know I do.

The health claim

I am pretty skeptical about health claims by food companies.  In general I do not drink much juice because most of them contain too much high fructose corn syrup.  I believe that most of our food should come in its natural form, not processed and changed into a packaged product (that is not to say that I do not eat or appreciate packaged product). So I would buy Pom Wonderful? Yes.  But definitely not as often as the company would like.

Until next time and thanks for stopping by Small Steps to Health.
