@Scott @ The Passive Dad - That is a good idea if you have what it takes to portion it out yourself. Unfortunately sometimes I pay the premium of individual containers because I am not very good with portion control.

@Sagan - Yogurt cheese? I didn't know you can make that yourself.

@~Kat~ - That is an excellent idea. I love having fruit with plain yogurt or cottage cheese as a snack.

@Tom Parker - I really do not believe any food item to be essential to my diet. As long as I eat a variety of food, I know that I am getting the nutrients I need. And when I say variety, I do not mean a baked potato and roast or mashed potato and a steak (because that is basically the same meal in a different form). Plain and Greek yogurt is a healthier option because it contains less sugar than the fruit flavored yogurt.

Good post. Adding fruit to plain yogurt to sweeten is a good idea. I just have a quick question. How healthy is plain yogurt or Greek yogurt? You say "if you must eat yogurt" which implies it is not that essential as part of our diet.

Mostly I make my own yogurt, but when I do buy it I only buy plain yogurt as I am appalled at how much sugar is added to flavored yogurt.
I flavor mine at home with fresh fruit or berries and the occasional splash of sugar-free syrup.

So good to learn about yogurt!

I agree that its all really ridiculous that yogurt is toted as a health food. That's why I was so excited to FINALLY find a non-fat plain yogurt at the grocery store with the only ingredients being skim milk and active bacteria cultures. I mix frozen berries in it or else use it to make yogurt cheese.
