Make the Smarter Choice - Indian Food
May 2nd, 2008 by asithi · No Comments
Last time we discussed the smarter choices when eating at fast food restaurants, American restaurants, Italian restaurants, and Asian restaurants. Here is the fifth post of our making smarter choices when eating out series. We will be discussing what to avoid, the smarter choice to make, and special requests we should be making when we eat at restaurants that serve Indian food. So is Indian considered part of the Asian food category?
For Indian food restaurants the fat traps to avoid are:
- Deep fried bread and appetizers.
- Ghee (clarified butter) used in cooking.
The smarter choices are:
- Grain dishes with vegetables, lentils, and beans.
- Salads with yogurt.
- Roasted tandoori style meat.
Consider making these special requests:
- Leaner meats.
- Light on butter or oils.
- Make without cream.
Beware of the sauces, creams, or gravy. I love eating tandoori chicken and often have it with naan loaded with yogurt. Everything is pretty healthy, except for the yogurt. Same thing with I eat other ethnic food, I love the extra sauces or creams because I often do not have them around my house. Usually it is the sauce or the creams that contain all most the calories in food. So remember to ask for it on the side. Hopefully then you can control the amount to put on your food. But in my case, I tend to pour it all on my food anyways.
Until next time and thanks for stopping by.
