Make the Smarter Choice - Fast Food

In a perfect world, we would all have a healthy nutritious dinner at home each evening after a hard day. Since we do not always live in a perfect world, the best we can do is make better choices when we eat out. This is the start of a series of posts discussing what to avoid, the smarter choice to make, and special requests we should be making when we eat at certain types of restaurants. This post is focused on fast food.
For fast food restaurants the fat traps to avoid are:
- mayonnaise (think dry sandwiches).
- sauce, or creamy salad dressing.
- fried chicken or fish.
- french fries or steak fries.
- soda
- breakfast sandwiches, especially croissant sandwiches.
The smarter choices are:
- side salads
- chili
- bean burritos
- whole grained bagel or bread
- lean turkey or roast beef sandwich (love Arby’s)
- baked potatoes with salsa instead of sour cream
- grilled chicken sandwich
- small hamburger
Consider making these special requests:
- hold the mayo
- extra lettuce and tomatoes
- hold the cheese
- sauce on the side
- vinaigrette salad dressing instead of creamy dressing
These fast food places advertises the different sides available for their meal deal. Why not take advantage of them and swap out the fries for a side salad or apple slices? The fries have more calories than the rest of the meal sometimes. Make the better choice.
Until next time and thanks for stopping by.
