The Super Bowl and How One Person Can Make a Difference
February 2nd, 2008 by asithi · No Comments
The Super Bowl is tomorrow! We are going to a party at my friend’s house. Each couple is supposed to bring some snacks. On the menu so far are:
- Mini pizzas
- Cheese poppers
- Spaghetti
- Spinach dip and chips
- BBQ pork
- Chips
- Mini tacos
- Ice Cream
- Soda
- Beer
What is wrong with this picture? Where are the healthy foods? When I told my friends that I am going to bring a veggie tray, they insist that I bring buffalo wings instead. ‘No one is going to eat the veggies!’
The way our friends eat can influence the way we eat. When someone in the group wants to be healthier it can change the dynamics of the group. They rolled their eyes when I mention the veggie tray. I anticipate tomorrow to be a tough one, with friends shoving food my way and insisting that I look fine. But when you are overweight in a room full of overweight people, of course you do not stand out.
One person can make a difference. When I started my first job after college, I usually take my breaks by walking between the rows of cars in the parking lot while my co-workers head to the cafeteria or the benches next to the building, but I know they were watching me. I was able to persuade a co-worker to take a walk with me one afternoon. And the rest is history. By the time I resigned my job, there were multiple groups that walk the parking lot during break time. One lady even went so far as to strap on pink ankle weights and pump her hand weights while she does her walks with her friends. Sometimes all people need is someone to show them a healthier alternative to spark their own motivation.
I am going to bring my veggie and fruit trays tomorrow. Health is worth the effort.
