Is the Wii comparable to a workout?
February 1st, 2008 by asithi · No Comments
Last Christmas everyone in my office was trying to get their hands on a Wii for their kids. One co-worker, over the course of four weekends, stood in lines similar to Black Friday, to get her hands on four Wiis for herself and her friends. Wow! I hope that when I have kids I will not think it is fun to get up at four in the morning on a WEEKEND to get them a toy. Please let my husband drag me back to my warm bed!
But it is my fault that my co-worker got all excited about the Wii. I played the game at my sister’s before Thanksgiving and I came back to work raving about how much fun it was and how my arms ached from all the movements. I kept telling her ‘It was a real workout!’
Is the Wii comparable to a workout? According to this article in Monsters and Critics, it depends on what game you are playing.
30 minutes of walking ranks higher than 30 minutes of bowling or golf in Wii Sports.
However, 30 minutes of boxing in Wii Sports has more cardio benefit than 30 minutes of walking.
Hmmm….I wonder how will the Wii Fitness compare when Nintendo releases it. Maybe I should have told that co-worker that I was playing the boxing game in Wii Sports the entire time. After all, when you omit the details, you are not telling the full story. I think the Wii is a great get-together game, but I would not rely solely on this game for the exercise portion of my weight loss plan.
