Fitness at Your Desk

Most people spend 30-40% of their waking hours sitting in front of a computer at work. I actually spend more time than that since I usually like to end my evenings reading other blogs and news before going to bed (Please tell me that I am not the only one voluntarily spending more time in front of a computer at home). A car accident two years ago messed up my back. Various activities will make it act up again and sitting still for long periods of time is one of them.

At work I make a point to use the restroom that is further from my desk to encourage more movement. But seriously, you cannot go to the restroom every hour without people gossiping about your bladder. And sometimes I get so engross in my work, that I do not notice the passage of time. There are various software available you can install on your computer that can pop up on your screen giving you a quick stretching or sculpting session at set time intervals. But you usually have to pay for them. Besides, I should not be installing software at my work computer since the IT staff deletes them when they do updates.

My cheaper version is to create a private calendar on my Outlook at work. Then, I create an appointment for myself every hour to stretch. When the reminder pops up on my computer screen, I get up and stretch. I have gotten some weird looks from some co-workers walking by when they see me doing this. And I have gotten a “you go girl!” But my favorite reaction of all time is the rumor that I know karate because I was caught doing the warrior pose (yoga). I have no idea why people always think that you must know karate because you are Chinese.

Until next time and thanks for stopping by.
